Haven’t been updating this blog for a while since my review last week, but I’ve been busy trying to create a new blog site. Overall, the transition went pretty smooth, had to do a few tweaks and updates but all the contents were transferred. Check it out at MY ARCHITECTURE THESIS
Presented the keynote above on Thursday’s review. Overall the feedback were pretty good. Observations from the critics were spot on and suggested good directions on how to pursue the next step in schematic. Critiques on the presented “schemes” were fair as the presented ideas were produced on a last minute and were not fully developed, thus the next step will focus on reviewing those strategies and provide a more analytical point of view of the site and the proposed building.
After the review:
I do notice that there’s a big jump from the conceptual idea to the program which needs a filter to fully understand what the proposed structure would be. In short, the proposed thesis will be a series of individual housing blocks spread around a compound linked by events and exhibits, with each individual units acting as its own “museum” – creating an archive of physical social interaction. Similar to the idea of social media tools i.e. twitter/facebook, the units will have the ability to filter their privacy for public viewing and vice versa, yet still have the ability to update their status but not revealing too much of their personal info.
Still working on the presentation for Thursday but it’s getting close. 2 additional scheme are lying around, just need to draw them up. But here’s a sneak preview for Thursday. The video has been speed up for this purpose.
Felt guilty that I haven’t been posting or doing anything for the past week, but I’ve been working on a few schemes for my review next Thursday. The three below are really rough ideas at the moment and I think it’ll change in the next few days as I go over them.
One
Idea One propose an investigation based on the infrastructure of a building. The long bar acts as a permanent core strip that contains mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems while acting as an arcade/corridor for the public, more or less like a power strip where the developer/retailer can ‘plug’ into the strip ready for business.
Idea Two
Idea Two splits the program pieces into individual buildings, connected only by exterior courtyards and small cuts between the buildings.
Idea Three
Idea Three is a singular structure where the proposed programs share a component between each other, thus eliminating the need for additional resource. In this case, the scenario above contains a museum, hotel and retail components. The museum shares a public theater with the hotel, and the retail component is placed strategically to serve both the museum and hotel. These components can also operate individually at different times.
Think I prefer the second as a plan, but before deciding on anything concrete, I need to sketchup up some models and supporting materials for the review next week.
Update: Found a new direction. Back to the drawing board again. New post should be up by Sunday night.
I took this picture earlier today on Figueroa Street in Downtown LA. It was a really quick snapshot as I was trying to cross the street before the light flashes. But I thought the end result captured the exact moment I wanted.
Am in LA for the rest of the week. Intro review went pretty well last Wednesday, hopefully I’ll be able to edit and write up the comments that I recorded during the discussion. In the meantime, I’ll be posting up a few bits and pieces of LA during the course of the week. Some inspiration images, perhaps and photos from Postopolis
Intro Review is in one day this coming Wednesday and I have some really, really last minute changes and new ideas and diagrams that I have to produce. But I think it’ll add to a good discussion this Wednesday. Some boards still in progress.
